Armenian labour inspectors trained in addressing and preventing workplace violence and harassment

Yerevan, Armenia – June 18, 2024 – A comprehensive three-day training programme was delivered by the International Labour Organization (ILO)  to equip labour inspectors with the crucial knowledge, skills, and tools needed to effectively address and prevent discrimination, violence and harassment in the workplace.

The training featured opening remarks by Vahagn Grigoryan, Deputy Head at Health and Labour Inspection Body (HLIB) of the Republic of Armenia, Özge Berber-Agtaş, ILO Gender Equality and Non-discrimination Specialist, and Nver Sargsyan, Project Coordinator, ILO project “Promoting Implementation of Labour Rights in Armenia Together” (PILRAT).

This specialized training programme designed by the ILO Decent Work Technical Support Team and Country Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia delves into key aspects necessary for labour inspectors to excel in their roles. Participants will gain a deep understanding of the definitions and impacts of violence and harassment as outlined in ILO Convention No. 190 on violence and harassment. Additionally, the training includes practical modules on conducting comprehensive assessments of company practices, recognizing signs of violence and harassment, engaging with relevant stakeholders, and advising employers on creating robust systems to address these critical issues.

By partaking in this programme, labour inspectors will significantly enhance their capacity to tackle one of the most pressing challenges in today’s workplaces. This training aims to better equip them to ensure safer and more respectful working environments, ultimately contributing to the overall well-being and productivity of workers.

Nver Sargsyan, ILO PILRAT Project Coordinator, especially emphasized, that "The programme includes practical modules on conducting thorough assessments of company practices, identifying signs of violence and harassment, engaging with key stakeholders, and advising employers on developing effective systems to mitigate these problems. This comprehensive training equips inspectors with the necessary skills to foster safer and more respectful work environments.”

The training is scheduled took place from June 18-20, 2024, at the Aghveran resort in Armenia, bringing together a diverse group of labour inspectors committed to advancing workplace safety and respect free of discrimination, violence and harassment.
