POSITION: External Relations and Communications Intern

LOCATION: ILO Office for the United States and Canada, Washington, D.C.

TIMEFRAME: Spring/Summer 2024

SUPERVISOR: The Programme Intern will work under the direct supervision and in close collaboration with the Senior Government Relations Officer and under the general guidance of the office Director.

DESCRIPTION:


The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations devoted to promoting social justice and internationally recognized human and labour rights, pursuing its founding mission that social justice is essential to universal and lasting peace. The only tripartite U.N. agency, the ILO brings together governments, employers and workers representatives to set labour standards, develop policies and devise programmes promoting decent work for all women and men. The ILO's Decent Work Agenda helps advance the economic and working conditions that give all workers, employers and governments a stake in lasting peace, prosperity and progress.

The ILO Office for the United States and Canada (ILO-Washington) is responsible for fostering cooperation and engagement with government entities, workers' organizations, and employers' organizations, aiming to promote decent work and social justice. It serves as a critical liaison, facilitating dialogues, fostering partnerships, and advocating for initiatives aligned with the ILO’s global agenda.

The intern will carry out full-time tasks in the ILO-Washington Office. Duties include:
  • Assist in analysing and reviewing policies and initiatives from the United States and Canadian governments that relate to labour standards, employment, and social justice.
  • Participate in meetings and events relevant to labour and employment issues, providing detailed summaries and action proposals that align with the ILO's mandate and strategies.
  • Assist in the creation of briefing notes, position papers, and communications materials that articulate the ILO's policy approaches and application in practice at country level with the aim of strengthening strategic partnerships.
  • Support the development and execution of communication strategies and events aimed at enhancing collaboration and dialogue with government agencies, employers' organizations, and workers' organizations in the United States and Canada, including the creation of promotional materials and social media campaigns.
  • Provide communications support for ILO initiatives and events, ensuring the effective distribution of ILO publications and informational materials to stakeholders, including government officials, social partners, and the public, to raise awareness of ILO's work and objectives.
  • Assist in the creation and dissemination of content for the office’s digital platforms, including the website and social media channels, ensuring the content is engaging, informative, and reflective of the office's activities and achievements in promoting decent work and social justice.
  • Support the organization and implementation of outreach and educational activities aimed at enhancing the understanding and engagement of United States and Canadian stakeholders with the ILO's initiatives and projects, including workshops, seminars, and public engagements.

EDUCATION:


Interns should be enrolled in the final year of a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme or equivalent), or in a higher degree programme as may be required for specific internships, in a recognized university, school, similar institution or related vocational programme, in areas relevant to the work of the Office, or have completed such programme in the year preceding the application. Programs including but not limited to, international relations, economics, development studies, political science, law, business, journalism, policy analysis and other relevant studies are preferred. This internship assignment follows the rules and policies for internships that are consistent with the ILO’s Headquarters internship programme.

CONDITIONS OF INTERNSHIPS

  • The cost of travel, insurance and accommodation as well as living expenses, are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
  • Interns are responsible for making their own travel arrangements and for obtaining the necessary passport and visa or other documents for entering the U.S.
  • Interns are responsible for arranging their own accommodation.
  • ILO does not accept responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship.
  • Interns are responsible for procuring and maintaining their own insurance coverage for illness and accidents while they are working at the ILO and a copy of documentation attesting to such insurance coverage should be provided to HRD by each intern on their first day of internship.
