Georgia joins efforts to protect seafarers’ rights by ratifying the Maritime Labour Convention

Georgia is the 105th Member State of the ILO to have ratified the Convention.

On 14 February 2024, the International Labour Office (ILO) received the instrument of ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, as amended (MLC, 2006) by Georgia. This ratification represents a significant contribution towards the universal application of the Convention.

Receiving the instrument of ratification, Mr. Gilbert F. Houngbo, Director-General of the ILO, stated that “I congratulate the Government of Georgia, an increasingly important player in the maritime sector, for the efforts undertaken to ratify this landmark Convention”. “The ILO stands ready to accompany the country towards its full implementation”, he added.

His Excellency Permanent Representative of Georgia, Ambassador Alexander Maisuradze, when depositing the instrument of ratification, welcomed the long-term excellent cooperation between Georgia and ILO. He indicated that “it is our steadfast belief that the entry into force of the MLC, 2006 for Georgia will contribute to further strengthening of the employment conditions of seafarers and receiving the highest working and living standards by all working on ships, not to mention a positive impetus for enhanced partnership and cooperation with the ILO”.

The MLC, 2006 will enter into force for Georgia on 14 February 2025, that is one year after its ratification. For further information, please visit the MLC, 2006 webpage.
