ILO is committed to Decent Work amid conflicts in Sudan

On the first anniversary of the war in Sudan, ILO stands in solidarity with the people of the country as they face danger, displacement, job losses, and economic decline.

As the world marks the first anniversary of the war in Sudan, the International Labour Organization (ILO) stands in solidarity with the people of the country during this challenging time. The conflict has had a devastating impact on the country's labour force, exacerbating existing socio-economic challenges and creating new obstacles to decent work and sustainable livelihoods.

The ongoing conflict has led to widespread displacement, with millions of people forced to flee their homes in search of safety and security. This has disrupted families and communities, uprooting lives and livelihoods and leaving many without access to employment opportunities.

The destruction of critical infrastructure, including roads, factories, and agricultural land, has further compounded the challenges facing Sudan's labour force. Businesses have been unable to operate effectively, leading to job losses and decreased economic activity. The disruption of supply chains has also affected access to essential goods and services, deepening the humanitarian crisis.

Women and vulnerable groups have been disproportionately affected by the conflict, facing increased risks of exploitation, gender-based violence, and discrimination in the labour market. The loss of education and skills development opportunities has also limited the future prospects of young people, hindering their ability to contribute to Sudan's economic recovery and development.

As Sudan strives to rebuild and recover from the devastating effects of conflict, it is essential to prioritize the protection and promotion of decent work and sustainable livelihoods for all. The ILO remains committed to supporting Sudan in its efforts to create inclusive and resilient labour markets, strengthen social protection systems, promote peace and stability and social justice for all its citizens.

The ILO, like all other UN Agencies, continue to provide humanitarian and development support in Sudan. In particular, the ILO continues to provide its services to Sudan through the Partnership for Improving Prospects for Forcibly Displaced Persons and Host Communities (PROSPECTS) funded by the Government of the Netherlands, that brings together three agencies (ILO, UNICEF, UNHCR) and the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labour (DRL) Project.

Together, we can build a better future for Sudan, where every individual has the opportunity to realize their full potential and contribute to the country's sustainable development.
