Director, Dennis Zulu and Deputy Director, Lars Johansen paid a courtesy call to the Honourable Glenbert Croes, Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Aruba, on 2 February 2023.
During the discussions the Hon. Minister Croes, highlighted issues related to the island’s limited fiscal space due to the debt burden assumed during the COVID-19 pandemic, among other things to protect employment. He also underlined the Government’s commitment to promoting decent work and their enthusiasm for an even closer collaboration with the ILO towards those goals. He mentioned specifically the work of the Tripartite Council, and the development of a new OSH law which is about to be submitted for approval.
In this context, the ILO underscored the decision of the ILC to make the two OSH Conventions (C155 and C187) fundamental, and communicated its preparedness to support Aruba in ratifying them. Additionally, the recently finalized AIMS studies for Aruba and Curacao, which is especially relevant given the mandate of the Ministry on integration, which currently means finding solutions for the high influx of people from Venezuela, were discussed.
