Project summary

This project, running from June 2024 to December 2025, aims to improve labour market statistics to reflect the impact of climate change on labour market outcomes in the Asia-Pacific region. The project is a collaboration between the International Labour Organization (ILO), National Statistical Offices (NSOs), Departments of Labour (DoLs), and Employers’ and Workers’ Organizations in the Marshall Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu. The Pacific Community (SPC) and other stakeholders, including civil society organizations and academia, are also involved.

The relationship between climate change, livelihoods, and labour markets is complex, and there is a lack of robust quantitative data to gauge the direct impact of climate change on employment. This is especially true in Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which are heavily affected by climate change but have limited capacity to collect and analyze data. This project aims to fill this gap by providing technical support in collecting, analyzing, and utilizing labour market statistics.

Objectives and Expected Results
The project will focus on capacity development and technical assistance to enhance the analysis and use of labour market statistics. It aims to establish partnerships from the Global South to improve the capacity of the Pacific Island Countries to assess the climate impact on the labour market and facilitate evidence-based policy responses.

The initiative will support peer learning and online knowledge-sharing sessions among academics and experts from different SIDS. It also aims to establish a robust South-South network of experts, statisticians, academics, and researchers.

The expected results include improved knowledge, expertise, and capacities of DoLs’, NSOs’ staff, and tripartite constituents through South-South exchange of experiences and good practices. The project will also lead to the production of two analytical reports on the impact of climate change in the labour market and employment outcome in the Pacific region.
