Mapping the coffee value chain in Honduras

This report presents a mapping and analysis of the coffee value chain in Honduras, carried out by the CLEAR Supply Chains project. It is a synthesis of key takeaways from relevant initiatives and research, as well as consultation with key stakeholders in the Honduras coffee industry. 

The main aims of the report are to:

  • Understand the structure of the coffee value chain (upstream, midstream and downstream), the structure of the coffee sector, trading practices, and factors which impact on value addition.
  • Identify key actors along the coffee value chain and identify opportunities to cooperate, involve or align with key global, national, regional and local actors.
  • Understand the current landscape of projects and interventions (UN agencies, public sector, private actors, etc.) working to achieve decent work and improved livelihoods in coffee-growing areas in order to identify potential synergies and opportunities for collaboration, as well as geographical priority areas.

The report is not a quantitative survey and does not serve as a baseline for the project. It is intended as a basis for discussion with project partners and stakeholders towards deciding upon key points and modalities regarding the project’s implementation in Honduras. These include geographic priority areas (departments) for implementation, and thematic priorities as well as key operational considerations.

Mapping the sector and key context considerations. The study was undertaken between November 2023 and February 2024 and is based on a review of available reports and materials relating to the coffee sector (structure and market systems), key actors and initiatives working in the industry, and materials related to decent work in coffee and wider agriculture. These reports were synthesized to draw out observations considered to be important contextual considerations to inform the design of key interventions under the project. These observations were presented to and discussed with national stakeholders and UN agency participants through a series of bilateral interviews as well as a plenary conference held in Tegucigalpa on 15 February 2024.

Mapping the stakeholder and interventions landscape. Available research materials and the stakeholder engagement process were used to identify key initiatives and stakeholders currently or recently working on relevant themes for the project in Honduras. A survey was conducted among the ILO Child Labour Platform (CLP) members to understand their engagement in the Honduran coffee  sector. Interviews were also held with UN agency partners to understand their current project interventions – as well as geographic and thematic priorities in the country – with the aim of identifying synergies with the project. Finally, bilateral discussions were held with key national stakeholders and initial findings were presented in a workshop held in Tegucigalpa on 15 February 2023. Stakeholder feedback is reflected throughout this report. Results of the project mapping were used to support a scoping of potential geographic and thematic priorities for the project.
