The European Union-funded joint project, implemented by International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) aims to promote socio-economic inclusion by addressing risks to children and young workers in plantations in Tawau, Sabah and the challenges and opportunities in protecting their rights and improving educational and skills needed for their social and economic inclusion.

Objectives

This 18-month joint project delivered by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) aims to promote socio-economic inclusion through enhanced access to and participation in education and training opportunities and livelihood of children and young workers in the Sabah State.

In order to enhance education and livelihood opportunities, the project will reach children and their families, both documented and undocumented, living in or working around oil palm plantations in Tawau in Sabah.

The project aims to deliver tangible outputs, which include:

  • improved data of children working in and around oil palm plantations;
  • increased awareness of child rights issues that are the root causes of child labour among key stakeholders;
  • ideate and accelerate solutions to address child rights issues that are the root causes of child labour;
  • the provision of replicable education and training model; and
  • a joint roadmap between the government and the United Nations.
